Heading back to grandma Catalina’s farm In Can Puvil, therapist Marina Cardona recovers one of the most traditional trades of Ibiza

Joan Riera is an elderly farmer who spends his mornings in the Centro de Día de Cas Serres. That’s where he met Marina Cardona, who learned the rudiments of agriculture from the wise, rough hands of Joan. Together they planted a small vegetable garden on a terrace at the center where this Ibizan from Sant Josep works as a therapist. Some time after, about three years ago, Marina decided to give her life a 180-degree flip: she asked for a leave of absence from her job and dedicated her body and soul to Can Puvil, the fields that her paternal grandmother’s ancestors had cultivated generation after generation.

Marina was raised on the estate where sa güela (her grandmother) Catalina picked the vegetables that her garden bore. Always with an eye on her little one Eric, who loves moving boxes of vegetables from here to there, Marina is bringing back the shine to Can Puvil through the patience and consistency that every Balearic peasant farmer needs. Her estate is one of the organic ranches that is part of Ecofeixes. This cooperative brings a dozen of local variety fruit and vegetable producers together. Many of its members are under 40 and, like Marina, have reinvented themselves professionally in order to learn a trade that seemed to be lost but was still alive deep down.

Apart from supplying to local businesses, the tomatoes, peppers, watermelons and green asparagus – a speciality of the farm – from Can Puvil can be savored as a part of the delicious dishes at Sa Caleta, the restaurant that the Cardona family has run for the past 30 years in a nearby cove.
