MISS HONEY DIJON THIS CHICAGO BLACK TRANSWOMAN BREAKS ALL THE STEREOTYPES OF ELECTRONIC MUSIC

Dj, producer, activist and transwoman of color. A revolution manifesto. When you play live, do you feel that you are transforming the world?

Thank you. That’s a nice compliment to receive. No, I do not feel like I am transforming the world. That’s a bit extravagant. I do however feel like I am contributing to dance music in my own unique way by continuing a specific way of presenting music and djing that is deeply rooted in queer culture, specifically people of color. That culture and language of music expression is slowly being erased and I hope to keep it alive through my work.

You said that when you were growing you escape by collecting records and magazines was your salvation in your childhoood. When did you know you were a different person?

The world tells you who they want you to be before you have the language to decide who you are. Through rejection, bullying, and taunting I realized that I didn’t quite fit in. So my surroundings basically formed my belief about myself, which of course wasn’t true. It was through their fears and how they were taught that they reacted to me in the way they did to my self expression. In hindsight, although extremely painful, I wouldn’t change a thing because all of the shit that I experienced it prepared me for the life I’ve chosen. Being different, hell everybody is different. It’s just when you don’t let others belief systems affect how you feel about yourself or define your self worth.

Is it difficult separate sexual orientation from gender?

Sexual orientation and gender expression is unique for everyone. There are 7 billion people on the planet and there are just as many sexual and gender expressions as there are people. No two people are the same and there are more than two genders and realms of sexuality beyond straight and gay. We were just taught that, and just because someone tells you something doesn’t make it true. To make it super easy for people, sexual orientation is who you go to bed with, gender is who you go to bed as.

You’ve lost your record collection in an accident in your storage unit. How was that? How did you react?

It was fucking traumatic and I still haven’t gotten over it. It was devastating seeing things from my childhood and teenage years gone just like that. Things that give you a sense of hope, music that got you through the trauma of self discovery, music you had sex to or your first clubbing experience. Artwork you treasured. At that moment I really realized that i don’t really own anything and that its the things I hold in my heart and my experiences in life that can’t be taken away from me.

What has Dixon created in Pacha with Transmoderna?

One has yet to find out sugar! I’m sure it will be great. Lots of amazing artists on the line up. Im just as excited as you are.

What do you bring to it?

Simply put, just great music, good fun, and hopefully lots of bumping and grinding on the motherfuckin dance floor!
