DOMINGO ZAPATA THE LIFE OF THIS MALLORCAN PAINTER BASED IN MANHATTAN AND FORMER PARTNER OF SCARLETT JOHANSSON, TAKES PLACE BETWEEN THE STARS AND THE GLAMOR OF POP CULTURE

Who is Domingo Zapata?

A painter born in Palma de Mallorca of Andalusian parents.

Before becoming a painter and sculptor, you worked as a broker. Can you describe that metamorphosis?

Well, one has a dream and goes after it... Thankfully, God offered me an opportunity and I hopped on that train, which, thanks to God, gave me a chance to express myself and share my feelings with the world through my work.

You are among the best known artists in New York and your work is already part of some of the most important private collections. Can you tell us a little bit about your career? Were you anxious to be where you are now? Or is this just the fruit of a series of coincidences?

A little of both. The truth is, I have so much to be grateful for, I wouldn’t know where to start. But I’m convinced that coincidence is something that happens when you work hard and go after your objectives.

What do you do when you begin to doubt everything?

I have a glass of whiskey and listen to my good friend Alejandro Sanz sing... Hahaha! After a little while, the doubts dissipate.

Jonhny Depp and George Soros bought some of your work at some of your first exhibitions. Did you figure out how to be in the right place at the right time?

I’ve managed to take advantage of the opportunities that life has offered me, and I’ve fought hard to prove that I am capable of rising to the challenge.

What is your work like? What are your main themes?

Everything that fascinates me... my work is based on sharp contrasts, both in the technique and in the form. I think history is key so that we can learn what to do in the future. That is what my work represents!

One of your latest projects is displayed in the lobby of the Freedom Tower at Ground Zero. What does this work consist of and how did you carry it out?
It’s a big American flag with stars made of steel where visitors can reflect and be part of the work.

Where do you find this inspiration?

In so many places. I think we live too fast and we fail to pay attention to all the little things that are so full of magic. I try to pay attention and find my inspiration there.

What are your summers like when you go back to the Mediterranean?

Wonderful, I have a great time... I love sailing! So I try to go sailing a lot and I eat as much as possible! Haha...
Ibiza is always in your heart, what are some of your favorite spots on the island?

There are so many... I’m crazy about Es Vedrá. D’alt Villa is a must-see, as is a night or two of good music at Ushuaïa!!! These things are non-negotiable... but they inspire to watch the sunrise!

What are you working on?

I’m preparing a sculpture in defense of the oceans for the United Nations that will take me through to the middle of 2019. I hope you like it!
