THEMBA
THE SECOND COMING...

Kay Borgia July 2018 MUSIC Read in PDF format N18/2018
THEMBA AN ARTIST WHO USED MUSIC AS AN ESCAPE ROUTE GROWING UP, IS ONE OF BLACK COFFEE’S BEST MATES AND PLAYS TUNES THAT WILL SEND YOU TO HEAVEN.

How did the DJing journey begin for you?

Music was the one thing that I related to at school and was my escape from real life. I was 11 years old when South Africa came out of Apartheid, so I was surrounded by song and dance from a very early age as this was one of the things black African’s did to forget their troubles and circumstances. I started collecting everything and soon became known as the ‘go-to- kid’ for music. One day a friend asked me to DJ at his sister’s birthday party, ‘what’s DJing?’ I asked him and he explained it as “playing music live for people”. I couldn’t get over the effect the music I loved had on people, I was hooked immediately.

How would you describe your musical style?

It’s actually difficult to describe, but it’s house music with a global yet deeply Africa rooted influence.

You are playing many dates with Black Coffee at Hï Ibiza this summer...how long have you known him?

I’ve know Nathi, Black Coffee, for a very long time and was around when he started his global career 10 years ago. In South Africa we support, play and pro- mote each other’s music in the spirit of Ubuntu. We’ve all dreamt about playing overseas and he’s the one that’s been pioneering the trend and showing us that its possible for us to be global play- ers. The biggest lesson being...DON’T lose your African Roots even though you are inspiring the world.

What were your first impressions of Ibiza?

Ibiza in 2012 was my first exposure to how massive DJing was outside my home country; the music, the energy, the vibe, the marketing, the massive clubs and the culture of the DJ completely blew me away. It gave me new light and hope for how big DJing could be and how far we could take in South Africa. Ibiza is special place for music, I’ve seen magic happenon these dancefloors and it’s been amaz- ing to watch a party change from being purely about the music to it being about the energy and the vibe within.

And finally – what does it feel to be one of the hottest artists in the world right now?

It really is an unreal feeling and the atten- tion is scary but I think I’m ready. I’ve also watched, seen and learnt from Black Coffee on how to handle all of this and I think the objectives are very clear. It’s also a big responsibility to have because we are flag bearers of our country, there is real pressure on representing the South Africa dance scene correctly. I have placed music first ahead of everything else as I feel it is the most important.
