JAIMIE JONES Taking a breather from his DC-10 duties, we poke around the superstar’s fridge and discover why he joined the ever growing list of DJs who have turned vegan.

Why did you become a vegan?

I’ve been a strict vegan for three years, but before that I gradually gave up various things over time such as meat, dairy and eggs. It was a decision made for personal health reasons and global environmental reasons equally. I was experimenting eliminating different foods anyway to
try and get myself in as best physical condition as I could, and at the same time, I started reading a lot about how detrimental animal agriculture is to the environment, it just felt like the right time to see ifI could it.

What health benefits has it given you?

When I gave up red meat 8 years ago, I instantly felt so much better, I had more energy and my health improved. I felt the same thing when I gave up dairy and then becoming a complete vegan was the final leap. Now I find myself way more relaxed, way more focused, I have way more energy and I’m happier all round because of my diet.

Is being a vegan and an artist on tour constantly sometimes a problem, are you ever stuck for food choices?

I’m not going to lie, obviously there’s a lot less choice. Every year I see a huge improvement in most countries for options. Once your body realises that vegetables are far better for it than other things, it starts to crave those.
And you can find vegetables and salads everywhere, at a minimum, so it’s not ever a problem for me really.

One thing you’d like to educate people about veganism...

It’s much easier than you think!

We come round to your house in Ibiza, what is your vegan specialty you cook us?

When I eat with my fiancé, we like to go for vegan sushi, vegan Thai, or eat lots of nut cheeses. So at home we keep it super healthy and simple. So as a non-vegan,i t’s probably a little hardcore! Lots of greens. What is the one dish you miss from your meat eating days?
I was a huge sushi lover, although I don’t miss eating it. I miss the experience and the texture. Vegan sushi is really good when it’s done well, but it is not so easy to find a really good one, compared to other vegan food.

What other DJs are vegan who you swap food advice with?

To be honest with you, since I became vegan everyone is always so curious about it. I think subconsciously a lot of people want to give it a go, because they understand the health benefits, but it seems such a daunting task, because you’ve been used to eating animal products your whole life. I end up talking to so many people about being vegan that the last thing I want to do is talk about being vegan with another vegan. And I think that they feel the same, because it’s just this unspoken about thing!

PARADISE is every Wednesday at DC-10 until 26 September.
