NIC FANCIULLI DELIVERS HIS DEBUT ALBUM AFTER A STORMING FIRST SUMMER AT HÏ IBIZA’S IN THE DARK…

The biggest news of 2017 in the Fanciulli household is the release of your debut album ‘My Heart’ which has taken a staggering 10 years to make. Dude, what took you so long?

Anyone that’s made (and finished) an album will tell you it’s not easy, and I think the first one is probably the hardest. So much time and effort goes into it, and the amount of track/ ideas you scrap over the course of the project is insane. I’ve said before, I probably had about 300 tracks at one point that I was considering for this project, so just getting that down to the final 15/16 records is a job in itself. That said I’m really really please with the result and I’ve been lucky enough to work with some amazingly talented people on the project.

This season in Ibiza was always going to be about Hï Ibiza, the new superclub taking over the hallowed ground of Space. You have been one of the residents at In The Dark, how has season one gone for you and has the venue lived up to the hype?

It’s definitely been one of the most interesting seasons on the island. You know with everything that happened last year with Space closing I think people were excited, but also kind of concerned at what Hï would bring. I have a huge amount of faith in Yann, Romain and the whole team at Ushuaia / Hï, and trusted them to build something that was different to Space, but still about Ibiza; and I really think they delivered on their promise. They’ve created a playground for adults, it’s fun, it’s balearic and I think it’s only going to get better. Space had almost 30 years to iron out every crease and keep improving the club - Hï’s been around for 5 months and I feel they’re really on the right track with it. I had a few moments in the main room over there where I honestly felt it was as good as I remember Space being, and that’s coming from the guy that played the penultimate record b2b with Carl there. So I think if I can embrace it, anyone can.

Looking back, how surreal do those final minutes seem now, what was going on in that famous box as chaos ensued around you?

Whatever happens in my professional life, that’s always going to remain one of the best memories for me, and one that I’m most proud of. I used to go to that club when I was 16/17 years old and look up at people like Carl in awe. You know we didn’t plan to close out the club that way - I was meant to play, then Carl was meant to close it (as he should), and when I went to step aside to let Carl play he grabbed me and said “you’re not going anywhere, you’re closing this club with me”; that’s something I’ll never forget. That’s part of the magic of Carl Cox, he’s one of the most amazing people I’ve ever met and he’s given me so much over the years, but that was a once in a lifetime opportunity that I’ll always be grateful for and will cherish for the rest of my life. The rest of the night is pretty well documented; it was a rollercoaster of emotion, and when it was all over we sat in Pepe’s office and all just gave each other a big hug.

Your parents first brought you to the White Isle in the 80s, what are your early memories of Ibiza from those childhood days?

I don’t remember a lot, but I do remember staying at the Hotel Toni - which is now where Ushuaia is - funny how things go full circle!

You are one of the few DJs out there who are prepared to play any genre of music to make a crowd move. How important is it for you to make each and every clubber on the dancefloor part of the whole experience?

I think that’s the most important thing in the world. Where I come from, DJing was a service, a career in which your sole purpose was to make people dance and enjoy themselves. I think some people forgot about that and DJ’s became more like pop/rock stars - it’s about the show, not about the music. I love big shows and love being able to have creative aspects of my setup around me whilst I play, but the singular goal of all of that is to make people dance and have an amazing time. We’re in the entertainment business at the end of day and I want everyone to walk away at the end of my set and to have felt something positive.
