LAUREN LANE The US superstar who is making ibiza her own

Your journey into electronic music began aged 16 on the streets of Philadelphia, when you went to your club and saw a DJ for the very first time. Was it a lightbulb moment for you?

Yes! I was instantly fascinated and wanted to know everything - what they were doing, what they were playing and how it all worked. When I was 18 I moved to New York and fell completely in love with the music scene there and met a friend with a DJ setup. e first day on the decks I did not stop playing for 8 hours, I was officially hooked.

At what point did you decide that your hobby of DJing should turn into a career? Was it a risk?

It was in Ibiza in 2008 that I realized DJing was what I wanted to do for my career and not just as a hobby. So much so I quit my other job, it was definitely a risk and it wasn’t easy at first and still challenges me daily - but it was a risk I knew I had to take and I am so happy I did.

You later moved to LA where you landed a residency at Sound. How musically clued up did you find the west coast crowds compared to the east coast?

East coast crowds are a bit more rooted in underground music, each city has its distant sound. e west coast has given us longtime legends like Doc Martin, DJ Harvey & Marques Wyatt, but generally the scene was more EDM when I first arrived. is has changed though and the west coast has evolved its sound to be more identified with deep house and tech house. Burning Man has also definitely influenced the west coast musically.

What makes Ibiza so special for you?

Ibiza is where music lovers from all over the world meet. Everyone engages with each other and come to have a good time. Every sunset is beautiful, there is a lot to take in and you never want to sleep because there is always something to do! It continues to inspire me year after year.

We come back to the Lauren Lane crib after the club in LA. You tell us you’re going to play one of your old-skool back to mine sets for us. What do you spin…?

Ha! When I do my chill out back to mine sets it’s more non dance music. Artists like Prince, Michael Jackson, FleetwoMac and 90s hip hop. Anything you carry on with Karaoke is always a good option too.

And finally, what does your French bulldog Bijou think of your music?!?

She is way too cool to care…
