What is your earliest musical memory from childhood?

Our earliest memories of really connecting with music are of listening to Michael Jackson albums and checking out the video. We were absolutely terrified of Thriller! Michael was such a huge inspiration and sparked something in both of us.

What was the original musical plan for Icarus?

The great thing about when we started Icarus was that there was absolutely no plan! We’d been making music under different guises for a few years and had moderate success but things had got a bit stagnant for us and we were desperate to try something new in the studio. We just started making our take on house music and we loved it. It came really naturally, and fast too! We wrote our first EP ‘Steal The Sun’ pretty quickly and from that I think we knew we wanted to pursue this new sound.

Last year you hit us with the atmospheric ‘Home’ tune, 2017 saw you top the charts with the smooth vocal house ‘King Kong’ monster. Why the switch in style?

To be honest, it just happened. We never try to pre-empt anything with our music, we just see what happens. We love writing all sorts of music and would like to be known as a diverse act with different styles of music but all with that ‘Icarus’ sound.

It must be amazing to have such a legend as Pete Tong on hand at your label FFRR to give advice on your music. Has there ever been a moment when you’ve had to say, ‘sorry Pete but that is a terrible idea mate!’

Not sure we’d put it down in black and white if there was! Haha. Honestly though, no there hasn’t. Having Pete on board is brilliant. There’s not really anyone out there that has the wealth of knowledge and experience in dance music that Pete Tong has.

What is your best ‘lost for 24 hours in Ibiza’ experience?

Last year I (Ian) had a fun one. I’d played as support for Skrillex at Ibiza Rocks Hotel and afterwards was recommended that I should go to Pikes, so thought I’d check it out. After a while there (and a fair amount to drink) it was time to go, but as it was my first time, I wanted to make sure I’d explored all the different rooms before I left. The last room I came to was absolutely rammed full but I couldn’t see who was DJing. I managed to make my way through the crowd and just as I got to the door, Skrillex’s Tour Manager called my name and ushered me into the DJ booth where Sonny (Skrillex) was doing a surprise set. He was playing all sorts of house music, and I had no idea it was him DJing! We spent the rest of the night doing shots of hierbas behind the decks while Sonny handed them out to the crowd.
