Making Waves ONCE UPON A TIME THE ONLY WAY TO EXPERIENCE THE IBIZA MAGIC WAS TO ACTUALLY COME HERE. NOW, THANKS TO TECHNOLOGY, ANYONE IN THE WORLD CAN WATCH AND LISTEN TO THE SOUNDS OF THE PARTY CAPITAL OF THE WORLD…

Set behind the heavy stone walls of the city’s Santa Cruz church, Anna Tur’s parents couldn’t have found a more perfectly soundproofed location for Ibiza’s first ever radio station in the 1970s. A strange location but nevertheless there lies the birthplace for a now multimillion euro business with the likes of Ibiza Global, Ibiza Sonica, BE-AT.TV, Open Lab, Pioneer all now vying for your broadcasting attention.

“The early days of Ibiza Global weren’t easy,” Tur recalls.

“Some companies didn’t want to advertise as the black cloud of drugs and madness was still hanging over electronic music; now we are turning them away. Radio is the best way to share music and the world now recognises that Global is the leading link between the island and the audience.”

Igor Marijuan runs Ibiza Sonica, now eight channels strong and actively involved in broadcasting clubs and festivals using multi-platform technology. “When the internet arrived everything changed – suddenly we weren’t local anymore.

Listeners from all around the globe feel like they are here with us now, especially since we launched the live streaming cameras from iconic locations such as Es Vedrá and Café Del Mar which give our users a complete multimedia experience and a window to Ibiza from their home.”

Streaming has obviously had a huge impact. During the BPM festival in Mexico this year, Global received 14 million connections in 10 days - three times their normal audience.

Ray Smith is the founder of live streaming service BE-AT.TV which has now invested in both Global and Sonica and is responsible for more than 200 live sessions per week.

“It’s always been difficult to fully capture the magic of the island through a website or radio station,” he says, “but that hasn’t stopped us trying. We feel that shared experiences plays an indispensable role in making an electronic music event unforgettable and we continue to push boundaries, developing innovations and taking extra steps with our broadcasts. The VR/360°/LIVE technology spaces are undoubtedly going to allow us to continue to evolve the ways in which we put people in the middle of the action. Nothing will replace coming to this magical place but we still want to be able to showcase the best elements of the island to those in other parts of the world who may not be fortunate enough to ever make it here.”

It’s a sentiment recognised by Anna Tur. “We will continue to adapt ourselves to the newest technologies. When Ibiza Global was born social media didn’t exist. I remember we were one of the first radio stations to have a Flash-formatted website. Now Flash is so dead!

I remember the time when doing online streaming was so expensive it looked almost impossible. Now we have more than 60 million listeners every year thanks to the radio player we have installed on our website. We have also developed the app and created the TV channel. I don’t think this is gonna stop any day soon!”.
