KENNY DOPE THE GRAMMY-WINNING NEW YORK DON ABSOLUTELY RULING IBIZA THIS SUMMER. AND WITH THREE TODDLER DAUGHTERS IN TOW!

One of the great things about the past couple of seasons in Ibiza is seeing the Americans back on top. Nu-skool, old skool…you’re killin’ it!

Hey, we’re just doing what we do! But I really think it’s down to the experience we have. We have been playing around the world for years and we know how to get the party jumping. Experience makes a good party, period.

There are now some 25,000 records released a week. Not only an impossible task for a DJ to wade through, but also so difficult for a new producer to break through. What’s the answer?

I don’t know what the answer is, but I know I have to speak up and try and pass on any information of value onto this new generation. It’s simple...

1. I don’t like it when people pass off music they didn’t do on their own as their own.

2. On the production side, you have companies that put out drum kits or drum sounds whereas back in the days you had to make your sounds or blend sounds to create your own...so now a lot of the records that come out sound the same because everyone’s using the same stuff and can easily try and recreate someone else’s work.

3. I have a big problem with the OGs not embracing the younger generation. They forget we were that age once and forget that we also did records that were in different keys, we were just doing what we felt...there is a big separation.

Everyone wants to grab headphones, a laptop, download some music and be a DJ. But it’s more than that. They need to learn the fundamentals of playing, learn the history of music, learn how to read crowds and so much more if you want to make it as a DJ. There’s a lot that goes into this career if you want to be successful.

Does music still make you emotional?

All the time. Only last week on my Rinse FM show I played a Latin record by Ray Barretto. It reminded me of my uncle who passed away while I was on tour a few years ago; I raced back but he had wanted to be cremated so I never got a chance to say goodbye. He and my dad schooled me, my dad on the Latin side and my uncle Hector on the funk and soul tip. I’m actually tearing up now on this Ibiza-bound plane just thinking about him…

And finally dude: triplets! You having fun daddy Dope?

It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do – we literally hit the terrible twos as soon as we landed in Ibiza.

Getting here alone should have been a reality show for sure. Now I have to laugh out loud, but what a mission. Mia, Riley and Carl have definitely changed my life forever. As hard as this road has been with Tracy and I trying to run the business as well as take care of them, I wouldn’t change it for anything. An amazing life changer.
