EROTICISM OF THE ONES AND ZEROS When love rhymes with virtual reality

Technology defines human behaviour, shaping our habits with each new use. Forty years ago, Woody Allen’s The Sleeper represented a dystopic future society where sexual life took place in the Orgasmatron - an artefact of high technology that allowed humans to reach orgasm in a few seconds - while modern human beings, for the moment, trust their relationships to the smartphone as a tool for socialising and flirting. Allen’s Orgasmatron was the climax of a hyper-technological civilisation that revered digital eroticism, with remote experiences replacing physical encounters. However, something similar has started to happen to 21st-century human beings, who appear to be exploring the validity of remote relationships, thanks to digital technology. The key to these experiences lies in the latest virtual-reality goggles, including the Oculus Rift (recently acquired by Facebook), Archos and Samsung GearVR. These goggles, which come with accelerometers, gyroscopes and geomagnetic sensors, conjure a convincing virtual universe before the user’s eyes. Thus, like a videogame in which the user is the protagonist, encountering a virtual universe where he has access to completely immersive 360º experiences, the human penetrates into a reality created by machines. This interactivity starts to migrate from videogames to sex à la carte, with the benefit of real images where the viewer goes on to become the protagonist of the scene. Soon we won’t just be flirting with our mobile phones – virtual relationships are just around the corner. Devices such as Cyberith Virtualizer, a virtual-reality simulator, frame a new frontier where Allen’s Orgasmatron is already a plausible reality. Welcome to virtual love
