SPICY IT’S GETTING HOT IN HERE…

…So take of all your clothes…. Chillies are hot stuff! I doubt you ever thought about health benefits while spicing up your curry until tears strolled down your face. We eat chillies because we like the kickass flavour, without giving a thought to what nutritionally or otherwise they can do for us. They are in fact one of the most widely used of all natural remedies. Good thing to know (while partying in Ibiza!) is that chillies are excellent for your immune system, the same system that can be quite disturbed when enjoying one too many parties! Red hot chilli peppers (not ones you are thinking of right now!) are rich in vitamins A and C. Vitamin A is important for healthy mucous membranes, which line nasal passages, lungs, intestinal and urinary tracts. They are higher in vitamin C than oranges and contain vitamin B and vitamin E, along with potassium, magnesium and iron. All of that in a little fiery chilli! If you happen to have caught a cold or are bit blocked up eating chillies can help you, as the heat from eating them stimulates secretion that helps clear mucus. Plus they taste good, if hotness is your thing. Known to many, cayenne has been shown to reduce blood cholesterol. In cultures where chillies have been used religiously, there have been much lower rates of heart attacks and strokes. And if you eat chillies regularly apparently you should sleep better and sleeping better is a good news in general for cardiovascular health. So if you are insomniac you know what your nightcap may be! Go for chilli and lemon tea. You’d be surprised how good it is! And if you are after endorphin rush look no further than hot chilli, the hotter the better! That painfully hot sensation that one gets from super hot chilli is what triggers the release of these feel good chemical neurotransmitters in our brains. The good thing is that the heat you feel also takes energy…and calories to produce! Result? Possible weight loss all while pouring chilli oil on your pizza?! Not quite so. But sprinkling some hot stuff on your healthy dish can multiply results, if weight loss is what you are after. This is good news because capsaicin, the chemical that gives chilli based spices their characteristic pungency, stimulates a natural process called diet-induced thermogenesis, which means we burn calories automatically instead of storing them. Chillies or eating extremely spicy food can be described as addictive but considering there is no chemical dependency (unlike in some other substances), you can’t really call it addiction! And if you are smoker, you are aware (I hope) that your puff destroys vitamin A in your body and eventually your health will suffer tremendously. The vitamin A present in chilli reduces inflammation of lungs caused by smoking. So if you can’t put that chemical injection down…start chewing on some chillies at least! Or stop by Passion and have Pure Energy juice, a wonderful concoction of grapefruit and orange (high c!), soothing honey and fiery cayenne. So good! And if healthy stuff is not your thing…see you at the bar for chilli margarita!
