HOT YOGA PRACTICED IN A ROOM IN 40 DEGREES HEAT FOR 90 MINUTE SESSIONS

Hot yoga is a huge craze at the moment. It’s popular worldwide and is a highly addictive form of Yoga, so its no surprise it’s the new designer drug on the island of Ibiza. Practiced in a hot room for 90 minute sessions – and the room is HOT, as in over 40 degrees - hot yoga follows a series of unique poses, which differ from the free flowing vinyasa sequences, spinal recalibration & meditation study we do at our school in Formentera. Hot Yoga instructors are trained over a 6 week period so it’s more like a fitness form of Yoga than the spiritual kind.

MYTHS OF HOT YOGA

I studied science and have been teaching yoga professionally for over 20 years and there is no biological truth to the fact that you will sweat toxins. You actually sweat 99% water which is why hydration is key if you are to choose this form of Yoga. Making the body work this hard to maintain coolness is quite a workout so it is not for the faint hearted or those with blood pressure problems. If this is the case you’d be better off rolling out your mat by the pool in the shade.

THE BENEFITS OF HOT YOGA

The hot room helps speed up weight loss, has proven anti-ageing benefits, increases oxygen flow to the brain, activates circulation, increases flexibility, helps prevents injuries and most importantly, allows you to stretch deeper and further into the postures, much faster than you would without the heat. You are likely to sweat a lot, so a change of clothing will be required after the 90 minute class. Make sure you are well hydrated before entering and leaving the class otherwise it can leave you feeling rather drained over a period of time. Yoga is very healthy, but externally heated yoga, specifically at a temperature of 100-120 degrees, is extreme in my own professional opinion. Nevertheless, if it works for you, it works. We have to do what we are passionate about in our lives. Life would be so boring if we didn’t do what we loved. If is your passion and you love it, don’t let this article or anything stop you. Life is about knowing what the risks are and using that knowledge to keep yourself safe no matter what you do whether you are in the best party or the best yoga class.
