TREATS THE DAYS OF ‘PLAYBOY’ ARE WELL AND TRULY OVER. WELCOME TO THE LOS ANGELES BASED MAGAZINE BRINGING US TIMELESS, BEAUTIFUL ARTISTIC PAGES OF PURE BEAUTY. WE HAVE A NICE DAY WITH THE FOUNDER STEVE SHAW

‘Treats!’ just oozes just what a modern gentleman’s publication should be in 2016. How did your journey begin?

“I wanted to be a scientist. I loved chemistry and physics at school but was very passionate about art and drawing – but was terrible at drawing. My father had a Russian camera; I think it was a Zenith TTL. I kept stealing it to take photos. I took a photography class at school and when I went into the darkroom for the first time it was amazing – it’s where the two worlds collided, chemistry and art, seeing those images emerge from the paper.”

Was there a defining moment when you realised there was a huge gap in the market for something fresh with Treats!?

“I think a lot of publications have tried to do this before – they either didn’t survive or the taste level just wasn’t there. With Treats! I wanted to provide a creative and collaborative platform that was uncensored and unrestricted in every way. I think the defining moment was when one of the best bookshops on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles called me and told me we were the biggest selling magazine in the 25-year history of the store. It was then I knew we were doing something right.”

What are some of the shoots you are most proud of in ‘Treats!’ history?

“I think the very first cover by Tony Duran defined what this brand is all about. Tony really pushed me to run that image too when I thought it was a little risky (two girls naked on the cover). But it set the tone for the magazine. The other defining moment as well was seeing the success of Emily Ratajkowski’s career blow up since discovering her in issue one. It makes me happy that these girls take a risk by disrobing for Treats! and trusting us to present them in the most tasteful and sophisticated way.” The art of a model understanding how the body works with a camera is an incredible talent.

Who from the supermodel world has got it and why?

“It really is and you can see that in the final results. I’ve worked with some major models in my career as a photographer and you can see the difference when a model knows what she is doing. It also comes from having some intelligence, understanding the concept, the clothes, the situation and to get the best images possible. Obviously Kate Moss is one of the best, she knows fashion better than any fashion editor or stylist and that shows in her ability as a model.”

How do you make shy models relax?

“Ha ha. Tequila! Get to know them, who they are, gain their trust. Different photographers work in various ways, some scream and shout and make girls cry to try and get some emotion out of them when pushed. I think that can work too, but it’s not my approach. Ultimately, it’s all about the trust and relationship between the model and photographer. I have so many photographers ask us to get models for them but in order to create something beautiful they have to have a connection. It’s not about showing a boob or nipple, it’s about freeing your inhibitions and letting go. It shows in the final images – sexual becomes sensual when done the right way.”

What are your thoughts on how sex is portrayed and censored by social media in 2016?

“How have Instagram and Facebook become the world’s censors? Who are they to tell us what we can and can’t see? I am British but I live in America – it’s still so puritanical here, they don’t understand sensuality. I think mainly because they have never seen anything done the right way. When nudity is mentioned they associate it with Playboy: gratuitous and for men. I find some of the Instagram girls more offensive despite having very little clothing on: ass in the air, cheesy poses and huge fake breasts. But Instagram allows that and finds it more acceptable than a beautiful nude artistic image that gets flagged or deleted, despite being natural and beautiful.”

Non-exploitation of the naked body is the primary ethos of the magazine. Do you think there will be could be a movement towards artistic nudity within the porn industry

“No, I think that porn will just get worse, people want to see things in porn that they can’t do at home. It’s only going to go more extreme and also virtual reality is the next thing. It’s not going to change it’s going to get worse. Artistic nudity is all a matter of good taste, something that does not exist in the porn world.”

You have recognised the transformative power of the fashion industry – where can you see it going in the future?

“I think the fashion industry is changing as a whole. Fashion Week will cease to exist because it’s no longer viable for a fashion label to show clothes in a show then sell them in the store in six months’ time – people want what they want now! Burberry have changed that by doing ready-to-wear available right off the runway; it makes sense. Fashion Week and the business of that is dated and old fashioned – it’s all online and instant gratification now. That’s where it’s changing.”

Body image is a controversial area especially with young impressionable women. Do you think that plus-size models need representation?

“I think they do yes and it is happening. I just think being happy and healthy is the most important thing. Every cover of a magazine with a celebrity on it is over-retouched – that’s the thing that gives young girls a false sense of image and it’s impossible to attain that. But they are led to believe it’s real. In Treats! we embrace natural beauty, and unless it’s the photographers style we do little retouching and rarely have fake breasts featured. More than anything it’s empowering – we want to show some flaws as that is reality.”

What does it take to be the next supermodel?

“Good question. I think it’s a girl who appeals to men and women alike, who women want to be and who men want to be with – that’s what defines a superstar. Someone who is in control of her own destiny, confident, secure and intelligent – not just a pretty face.”
