NICK AND CHLOË THE GENIUS DUO FROM DUBLIN AND PARIS BEHIND THE EXQUISITE ANTS 2016 CAMPAIGN

How old were you when you first became fascinated with the world of photography?

Chloé Claverie: “I was 15 and studying graphic design in Nice when I came across a bookshop sale. My eyes fell on a book from Gian Paolo Barbieri called ‘Madagascar’, an A3 black-and-white edition with full-bleed photos. The impact of the images are still strong in my visual memory. The light was powerful, it sculpted the body of the people from the tribe and you felt the heat, the sweat, the heaviness. And one photograph was shot under someone’s foot – it looked dusty and sticky. It’s that picture that made me understand what photography could do, what it meant to have an opinion through a lens.”

Nick West: “I remember as a pre-teen trying to find pictures of nude women in glossy coffee-table books, long before the days of the internet! I guess the images I found went beyond my prurient interest and subliminally I started to learn about photography.” How would you describe your approach to photography? Chloé: “We are trying to make our childhood memories come alive through poetic stories that we create. It’s a medium for capturing an abstract thought that has by the nature of photography become figurative.

How do you cope with the huge entourages that celebrities bring with them on shoots? They must be a nightmare?

Nick: “We ignore them. And just do our work.”

Have you ever had a model or subject refuse to work with one of your ideas?

Chloe: “Ha ha. No, only Nick who still refuses to pose for me.”

Why do you prefer working as a duo?

Chloé: “It’s not necessary a preference, it just happened between us. When we look at something on the street that inspires us, we don’t need to explain it to each other, we simply get it with no words. Nick has an Anglo-Saxon masculine view and I have a more Latin and feminine one. Somehow it makes our work a third entity on its own. Nick & Chloé is one artist.”

How difficult is it being so creative in such a corporate world?

Nick “Very - if you don’t work with the right people. The key is the team – you have to find your perfect creative family.”

What sets the work of Nick & Chloé apart from your rivals?

Chloé and Nick: “You tell us.”
