SASHA We get the inside track from the dance music legend

At the start of the season there were all sorts of rumours circulating in Ibiza that you were going to be a major resident at We Love – what happened?

The whole We Love moving to Sankeys thing happened quite late in the day and to take on a one-club residency takes a lot of planning. I’m happy with my summer in Ibiza playing at some of my favourite clubs – which of course includes We Love. Who knows about next year? I have a lot of respect for Darren Hughes, he’s one of the best promoters in the world.

And you’re back at Cream at Amnesia?

Yeah, it’s been about two years I think, and it’s another great club for a DJ to play at. Looking out at that sea of people in the main room with the cannons going off is insane. You starred at the Space Opening Fiesta in May, which is always brilliant… I have to admit it’s my favourite party of the summer. Everyone is raring to go, you can see it in their eyes. It really is a magical event. One of Ushuaïa’s newest nights that’s going great guns is La Familia.

Are you excited to be there in September?

I have a long history with Ushuaïa, right back to the days of the free parties on the beach. I did the Opening last year, which was amazing, and September is a great month for any DJ to play in Ibiza. Nic and Joris have a really good vibe going on down there.

There has been a lot in the press recently about the high prices in Ibiza. Do you think it’s a concern?

It is a worry, but Ibiza has this great knack of readjusting itself. It’s not just here though where prices are getting silly – look how much it costs to go to a festival in the UK. It’s no wonder people are jumping on budget planes and going to places like Croatia.

You must be really happy with how your label Last Night On Earth is going?

Totally. We have the next few months all mapped out release-wise, some brilliant people writing for us, a real positive vibe going on and some really interesting and cool parties coming up. I couldn’t be happier.

How big a team do you have around you?

Not many, funnily enough. There’s five of us pushing this forward, but luckily everyone has a really good ear for music.

You must be loving your adopted home city of New York at the moment – the underground scene is flying...

There was a big void when Twilo closed and now thankfully there are so many options. Not just clubs but rooftop parties, festivals, parties in parks, little cheeky bars… In my opinion, it’s the best city in the US right now.

"LAST NIGHT ON EARTH HAS A REAL
POSITIVE VIBE GOING ON"

But it must get pretty intense in New York during the summer; it’s so hot!

You’re so right. At the weekend though, most residents escape to the beach and the place is quiet. Which I don’t see the benefits of as I’m usually off DJing somewhere around the world!

What about the rest of North America – do you agree with the argument that EDM has opened people’s ears to different music genres?

I think the underground and commercial side of things are working pretty well alongside each other at the moment. I’m not totally convinced about the whole EDM cross pollination, but we’ll see. People’s tastes develop, maybe they’ll get bored with dance music – who knows? But North America is a great place to be right now.
